I spent a lot of time in Geel and the people there STILL take mentally ill freely into their homes. Funny story: my godfather grew up in Brussels and his Dad was a Maj. Gen, in the Belgian army (a doctor not a warrior) and used to take his kids out on excursions to explore every weekend, including to Geel where they learned about St. Dymphna. Fast forward to his King's College med school oral final and the only question was whether he knew who St. Dymphna was!
