There's injuries and there's injuries. Woodruff going down? That's bad luck, part of the game that all teams endure. But, the likes of Verlander, Scherzer, Degrom, Rodon et al landing on the IL is no surprise. Actually, it would be a shock if any of those guys pitched a complete season. Or even a season with a controlled, lesser workload.

Here's what you get for all that money, either:

1. A memory of a player's former greatness.
2. A false hope that an older player could replicate their walk-year numbers.

And the problem is, with all that $$ going down the toilet, you can definitely expect your front office types to be less than aggressive in acquiring expensive players mid-season.
