Let’s not forget though that Lewis is a spider expert and has been outspoken about silkworms being the cheapest way to make spidersilk and he was linked early on with Kraig. Unfortunately he moved on, and I think it had more to do with his choice of academic research opportunities and the probable resulting associated restrictions than anything else.

Randy Lewis recently collaborated with a team from China to modify silkworms to produce spider silk. This is different from his efforts to modify goats, alfalfa, and anything else he tried along the way. Here is one paper with mostly Utah State authors:

CRISPR/Cas9 initiated transgenic silkworms as a natural spinner of spider silk
Xiaoli Zhang, Lijin Xia, Breton A Day, Thomas I Harris, Paula Oliveira, Chelsea Knittel, Ana Laura Licon, Chengliang Gong, Geneviève Dion, Randolph V Lewis, Justin A Jones

Note that Justin Jones has taken over the lab now that Randy Lewis has retired.

You are going to explain to me that this is inferior to KBLB’s work because they are using silkworms instead of silkworms?
