A lottery system for access to DCVax-L would have been consistent with how access to another limited and expensive yet vital resource, namely public housing is allocated (at least in the US). This maintains the status quo as far as distribution of real estate by socioeconomic status while allowing the persistent and lucky a safety valve for their discontent. This benefits the status quo rather than undermining it.

It's better to have some affordable housing than none at all, just like it is better to have an organ donation waiting list that benefits some rather than to just deny a donated organ to everybody out of 'fairness' or to avoid making tough decisions. b

It's ugly but it's life.

Instead, almost no one gets access to DCVax-L but at least we're being 'fair' right?
