#205238 RE: Eli's Gone #205237

Wasn't the headline of this 2023 article also published in 2021 and 2022?

Is Yankees’ scoring woes just a slump or more?

If the writer anticipates Josh Donaldson having a "rebound season" he should be writing for the Onion.

Giancarlo Stanton played two weeks, then got hurt again and won’t be back until June. Harrison Bader is still rehabbing his way back from a spring training injury. The talk of Josh Donaldson having a rebound season stopped when he went on the IL six games into the season and a recent setback is delaying his return until who knows when.

That’s $57.7 million of the Yankees’ 2023 payroll providing no offense.

With one exception, Anthony Rizzo, their healthy regulars have underperformed, too, and that includes the captain. Aaron Judge has been productive with six homers and 11 RBI in 21 games, but his 0-for-4 in Sunday’s 5-1 Yankees loss to the Blue Jays has his season average down to .244.

Judge’s average hasn’t been this low after this many games since 2016, his pre-rookie year. He started off like he hit in his 62-homer, near-Triple Crown 2022 season, batting .341 with four homers in his first 11 games, but he’s hit .135 with two homers in his last 11.

“He hit two hard (outs on Saturday), two hard (out on Sunday),” manager Aaron Boone said of Judge. “He’s not far off.”

Maybe. But other than Franchy Cordero, who hit a bunch of homers for a week and then went cold, everyone has contributed to an offensive slump that is hard to ignore.

The Yankees’ 4.23 runs per game through Sunday ranks 10th among 15 American League clubs. Their .227 average is 11th best, their .307 on-base percentage is ninth and their .706 OPS eighth.
