The cause of Parkinson’s disease is attributed to protein misfolding. The sigma-1 receptor is an endoplasmic reticulum chaperone which prevents misfolding of proteins and triggers autophagy to recycle proteins that are either misfolded or mutated thereby preventing aggregation.

Blarcamesine is a sigma-1 agonist (activator).

Blarcamesine can prevent Parkinson’ and/or Alzheimer’s diseases if caught early enough in the disease progression of the pathology.
