There will be more extremes, but the current extremes have yet to exceed the US drought of 1580 when US rivers flowed less than 25% of their normal volume and giant sequoias grew no new wood.

Even worse were the multi-hundred year droughts, especially in the US Midwest, between 900 and 1300 AD. Got rid of the Pueblo native americans and caused a collapse of the little known earthen slab pyramid-building Mississippian cultures. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippian_culture
