Another way would be to soften up the fairways. They are set up rock hard for the area where most drives land, then set up much softer where the roll out to. You can clearly see this when watching, how hard they bounce on landing, then how big the divots are when they hit the wedge second shot. I first noticed this years ago watching Corey Pavin at the Chrysler Classic. He was taking dry, dusty divots on his second shots and the players outdriving him by 50 yards were taking flounder sized divots.
