Well, they say the system is being developed to deal with other kinds of fruit and veggies as well.

Avocados are sly and unforgiving. Friends who live in California tell me you can put very unripe ones in the fridge, and they'll ripen more slowly, but I haven't had much luck with that. You buy one that's rock hard, thinking you'll have three days or more before you have to eat it, and then BOOM!! it's ripe the next day. You never really know what to expect.

So if the new system can accurately tell people that an avocado will be ready to eat in, say, three days, that would be very useful. Anyone can tell when they're ripe--you should choose ones that seem a little under, even if you want to eat them right away--but the riper they get, the more people have poked them, and that causes bruising.
