Pretty sure it's a fake story fabricated to scare people into selling or not buying.

If you buy a NWBO share through Etrade for example, they will owe you a share. You do not need to worry whether the share you own was originally a covered, shorted, or naked shorted share.

In the day of reckoning scenario, like in the company being 100% bought out for cash and all the shares need to be accounted for, I believe Etrade would just call in their "shares receivable" from whoever and that would be settled in cash. But regardless, all the customer would see is cash in their account. There is also SPIC insurance as a backstop. Again I would not worry.
