#125823 RE: Fruno #125820

I have spoken to an industry expert on this specific topic a few months back. They advised that 100 mm or 300 mm makes no impact on Lightwaves performance.

He actually said this question was an indication of lack of industry knowledge. I felt a little silly after asking but I know this person could easily provide clarity.

I can't provide evidence that poling or anything else at 300mm may be a problem when it is not a problem at 100mm.

I can share that KCC said this when we discussed it previously:

It would be really cool to hear they have perfected the poling processes on 300mm wafers. 100mm is fine enough to produce millions of modulators annually, though.

This implies that he doesn't know for sure if poling might be a problem with GF or anyone else using 300mm.

And I wonder if there may be other issues with the perkamine that may be different depending on the size of the wafer -- ALD process, etc.?

I"m agnostic. I don't know. I haven't seen evidence that any shareholder knows though for certain. And by this point I would think they have asked Dr Lebby the questions, so I do wonder if he just doesn't address these kinds of things, or what?

I also don't know the industry well enough to judge whether a smaller foundry or even a bigger one using 100mm or 200mm wafers will be able to sell products more cost effectively using Lightwave's smaller modulators than one using 300mm wafers that enable for lower cost production. Maybe they can. But could there be other issues besides current costs. Maybe they are anticipating future enhancements that will affect future costs? Maybe those enhancements simply won't work on 100mm or 200mm wafers. If someone like GF is using all kinds of tech that the 100mm or 200mm ones are not using -- and the big customers want that tech they may refuse to buy from the foundries that are missing those technologies. The fact that I"m not an expert makes me want to know from someone who is that we aren't in a David vs Goliath situation - that Goliath has welcomed us to his army. I'm not convinced that Dr Lebby even has said so. What have the TIer1's really said? We really don't know if they have gone beyond encouraging them to 'keep up the good work' do we?

It pretty much for me comes down to whether the end customer big boys are on board with Lightwave's vision or whether Lightwave is still trying to convince the big boys from the outside to change course and go with them.

I agree with KCC and would take it a step further: It would be really cool to hear from Dr Lebby that there are no technical barriers remaining and not market barriers remaining that are holding back very large customers from testing their products, and that those large customers are testing NOW with an eye toward very large orders ASAP.
