I remember a horror story about granite where an unlucky family got a slab of rock that was highly radioactive. Quartz is man-made. It is the non-solid quartz that I find appealing... some cool color combinations and chaos patterns.

You know, I have a friend that just ripped out her granite to install quartz. I just don't see the draw to quartz other than it being a solid color.

Don't watch This Old House. Adding to the confusion with counter tops is marble, soapstone and cement.

Quartz isn't necessarily a solid color; it can be any color you want, pretty much, since it isn't natural stone. As I understand it, though, the real advantage is that it isn't at all porous--marble is very porous, and granite somewhat porous--and so doesn't need regular maintenance.
