OT Scooter, There is no doubt that it is a very serious problem regarding pollenation for many plant types and honey production.
The use of pesticides(as you pointed out) has in many areas eliminated toads, pheasants, etc that feed on small insects. It is clearly evident that the food chain has been destroyed for many small game and their predators.
On the other hand the deer and elk herds continue to grow and over graze their habitat. The number of hunters is declining rapidly since children are not being raised as hunters. The Fish & Game departments need to thin the herds but run into protests from animal activists. I guess more wolves may be the answer here.
