Bahrain is 60% Shiite. There is a Shiite religious period called Muharrum. It lasts for 9 days. The 8th day is time for self flagellation. They beat themselves bloody.
On the 9th day they go on hashish and take to the streets, milling drunkenly and staggering around.
I lived in a heavlily Shiite district. On The 9th Day, I was driving home and the main street I was on was clogged with the idiots., but traffic was moving, slowly. I decided to take a short cut, BIG MISTAKE.
After a few miles Traffic stopped. The mob was pressed up against my car. They made no overt moves on me but I got hundreds of glazed eyed looks, as they pressed against my car. This lasted fortwo hours. The longest two hours of my life.
