Matt Carpenter hasn’t given up on coming back this season after suffering a fractured left foot when he fouled a ball off it on Monday against the Mariners. He got some positive news Wednesday, when he learned he won’t need surgery to repair the fracture, which Carpenter called “a clean break.” That likely means he’ll need from six to eight weeks to recover, which would put his return near the end of the regular season and before the playoffs. “I’ll be back this season,’’ Carpenter said Wednesday, after the Yankees lost, 4-3, to the Mariners at T-Mobile Park. “I feel good about it. We’ll see. We’ve checked everything and it’s the best we could hope for, given the situation. I’ve got a broken bone that takes time to heal.”
