Green, you are right on target. PBLS would be smart to NOT join the recent trend by jumping to ethanol. It doesn't make environmental, cost or BTU/gallon sense. Our oil dependency will be around for a long, long time. IMHO, coal and natural gas are abundant here in the US and will be part of our long-term, carbon-based energy and product solutions. Of course, ramping up nuclear, solar and wind power will help too.

Yeah...but it's renewable.

And corn is not the best source of ethanol. Sugar cane is. New technologies are making it possible to extract ethanol from most plant matter.

Anyone that says ethonal is a scam obviously does not understand the science behind it. Besides we WILL run out of oil.

Yes you get worse gas milage...but you can regrow your gas. It's really a no brainer. The biggest problem will be finding enough land to use as fuel crops when half the world is starving.

ethanol can and will become a vital source of fuel in the US in the next 10-15 years. You can bet your life on it. Look to south american countries to see it in action today.

let us go to war with iran-------crude may double------------------------then consider just why bush, probably knowing all you post to be true, yet and still encourages and even pumps alternative fuels. And pray don't forget two noteworthy facts about president bush: 1. he heeds no re-election need to play politics with ethanol. 2. he is privy to the oil business- yet still pumps ethanol. So what may seem illogical today about ethanol may be absolutely logical- given that crude zooms higher. Oh yeah, one more thing about bush- who, more than he, knows the odds of crude going higher from middle eastern potential disruptions in supply (iran)? Yeppers, when first he pumped ethanol, despite the illogical of it at this time, i figured there had to be a damn good reason for him to break from the oil patch fold so.
