Will your raccoons welcome you, or be pissed off by your long absence. If they really are like cats, it'll be the latter.
But you really do need to befriend the fox and make it laugh.
I'm glad your wife is making a good recovery. And that she doesn't have to use the scooter exclusively. My doctor did something to her ankle a year or so ago, and said she banged into things constantly.
