I don't think there's any question of it happening, I think there are too many questions of WHY it happened the way it did.

Since this incident took place in 1986, online Utah court records are not available prior to 1996 ( https://casesearch.utcourts.gov/xchange/?content=coverage )...so...the only other option would be....

Time to fire up the moped and cruise to the Utah courthouse to take a look at the records and transcripts. Just tell the clerk...."Can I see those check kiting records for that 22yo Asian guy from 1986?" She'll probably have them right there in her top desk drawer from all the people asking for them....
