Sure you can transfer your fund and securities. I did so. I opened a new account with TD ameritrade, and tell them to transfer all stuffs in my etrade account. It is free, but takes several days, and your fund and securities will be frozen for 3 or 5 days.

I wouldn't touch my AMEP shares of course. So I would keep the account. But for active trading my Etrade Pro craps out after an hour or so - MMs drop off - sometimes level II completely drops and I have to refresh. From reading the boards this is apparently a pretty common experience.

I would probably do what farm suggested and open a brand new account somewhere else for trading.
