There is no doubt about it. Putin knows he has overreached. For one, Ukrainian resistance is much greater than he anticipated. Putin has been universally slammed for his inane comments about Ukrainian leadership. And for his threat to go nuclear.

"Hmmm. I think it's entirely possible that Putin now recognizes this as a colossal blunder..."

One problem now for all of us is that the situation has to be managed to allow Putin to desist without losing too much face. Both on the domestic and international scenes.

Im like you,,,I don't get it either...

People have said he wants a place in history,,,He wants the old USSR back......

But Putin seemed so calculating...Its hard to believe he so missed the mark....The Ukrainians are fighting hard, The world is growing more outraged, Not sure how much tougher sanctions can get...

I must say I'm impressed by the world, the Russian people and the Ukrainians...I with you, I don't think he expected the push back...

I think somethings up with the call for talks, wether its a ploy to buy time or he is second guessing this I don't know...

How he could save face now I can't see...But in the end he is going to regret all this, he'd had been better off living in luxury and pilfering the Russian people...

Dear leader would be chanting Lock Zelensky up...(Fox is shifting gears but some damage was done,,,Trump hopefully will keep rooting for Putin ;)

I don't see him annexing Ukraine. He wants to install a puppet government.
The Russian empire has always had satellite states on it's border. My own people are from Poland, Belarus and Lithuania. Even where they came here before the Soviets took over, they still lived under the Czars.

I think Putin isn't so much worried about NATO either, as he is of the EU; he's terrified of having a functioning liberal democracy with a free market on his border, especially one with such close ties to his own people. The Baltic states are one thing, but they aren't Slavs. I don't know that the Baltic states have families that live on both side of the border. Ukraine is a different story. They do. For all the horrors of the past, the people themselves have strong affinities.

I was reminded today that Trump did nothing about Russia's occupation of Crimea for 4 years.

Trump imposes major sanctions on Russian oligarchs, officials, companies
"The Treasury Department, in connection with the State Department, targeted seven Russian oligarchs and 12 companies they own or control. It also issued sanctions on 17 senior government officials, along with a state-owned weapons trading company and its subsidiary, a Russian bank.

Mnuchin cited a number of Russian activities around the world as support for Friday's U.S. action, including Moscow's occupation of Crimea and violence in eastern Ukraine, support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's attacks against civilians, and Russia's "ongoing cyberactivities" and efforts to "interfere in the democratic processes of the United States and its allies."
