I'm not sure on the timing of it to be honest - I think what's going to actually hold it back longer than the tech, is the necessary upgrades to the current electrical gride system to be able to deliver that amount of power, that quickly. From my understanding of the current state of the grid - it wouldn't take very many cars pulling juice at that level to start causing rolling blackouts/brownouts especially in the more populated areas.
