The tragic example of Dr Semmelweis nearly two centuries ago shows that groupthink human failure is not new, nor will it be eradicated this side of Christ's return.

I took a history of medicine course in college. The basis theme of the entire course was the difficulty of truth overcoming "accepted opinion".

Big section on the uses of calomel. Imagine prescribing a patient ingest a "medicine" whose primary ingredient was mercury. Yet it was done for decades. Many pointed out that this might not be good, but it was the "standard of care".

In many ways, the whole concept of "standard of care" is to blame. Allows doctors to stop thinking and merely CTA.

Makes bloodletting seem actually humane in contrast.
