Intel's second attempt to replace x86. You don't really want to know about the first...
Edit: actually it was their first attempt. The earlier one, iAPX432, was an attempt to move out of the 8 bit market and move into the top ranks. However, it had some performance problems that might have been inherent. In a lot of ways it was really innovative. The 432 reportedly led directly to the 8086/88 and supposedly was sketched out in a weekend. Which could've been true, if you are talking about just the general architecture.
