A stock's worth is relative to other comparable stocks (asset/share, management quality, debt, reputation, cash, short and long-term prospects, industry, return on equity etc., etc.). Granted, the entire market or industry sector can be under-valued, over-valued or otherwise out-of-whack (Dutch Tulip Mania), but there are rational benchmarks. I don't think Warren Buffet, Goldman Sachs, et al look at it as "gambling", unless you really loosen-up the definition for "gambling" (yes, there are all kinds of risks, great & small).
