Now let's figure out what Intel will have to undertake to avoid all these problems. True: all they need to do is to introduce x86-64 instructions support in their 32bit processors (they got AMD's license last year already as a result of big cross-licensing agreement between these companies).

Note that this is a 2002 article, so the license was negotiated in 2001. I don't think either Intel or AMD officially confirmed that x86-64 (as it was then called) was licensed to Intel. Actually, there were a lot of licenses covered in a major agreement that year, and a lot of the details were not announced. It was reported by many independent sources at the time, but not officially confirmed.
