Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the future of American homeownership

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) announced on Tuesday that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will submit plans by the end of this year to reduce racial disparities in housing finance. FHFA’s announcement makes it clear that these plans must include serious measures to provide for equity in housing finance, potentially changing the focus and scope of housing finance policy for a generation.
On Thursday, September 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET, NHC and the Homeownership Alliance will co-host a forward-looking online convening to discuss the Enterprises’ role in affordable homeownership, the implications of FHFA’s announcement, near-term reforms in housing finance, and how we can collectively close the racial homeownership gap. The convening will open with a 45-minute conversation between FHFA Acting Director Sandra Thompson and NHC President and CEO David Dworkin. This will be followed by presentations and panel discussions from industry and government experts on closing disparities in homeownership, particularly in communities of color, and maintaining a sustainable mortgage market.

Thompson has acted fast so far. So, there's hope. But, if Treasury and FHFA were serious about the deadline, they wouldn't have used "endeavour to". The government never uses terms like that when they set deadlines for the taxpayers. It's usually submit it by a given date or be subject to fines and penalties.

I'm both perplexed and disappointed that we're not up by 20-30% this week given the possibility of positive news on the horizon. This is not like the Fannie I know.

With Gov bankrupt, on the verge of shutdown and REPS block raising debt ceiling, anything is possible. F&F are the only ones capable of doing the heavy lifting. Could be a golden buy opportunity.
