If you stole my lawnmower and I sued you, you might offer to return the stolen property and pay my legal expenses in order to avoid going through a trial in which you knew you would lose.

If a settlement was agreed upon, the case would be dismissed.

That does NOT mean you're innocent of stealing my mower.
