Patents are worthless unless they can be developed into a product that can be sold at a profit. You can get a patent for anything "unique," doesn't mean that you have the know how and funds to make it nor that it will be profitable. That's why you see "patents!!!" sung in a chorus on OTC pump and dumps with nothing going on and no cash to do it with. Pharmaceuticals take millions over millions (if not billions) to go from "idea" to being ready to even do the first trial to prove it won't kill the patients, much less the ones that prove it does what it is intended to do.
