#96264 RE: rahrah #96262

I just don't know but it's a lethal cocktail for some of the true believers. The long haul effects will not be well understood for years. I suspect millions who have survived COVID infection will exhibit long term disabilities and some of those disabilities will be unthinkably sad.

The reaction is not all that different from the 1918 flu. Most countries didn't report the impact but Spain was a neutral party to WW I and their press was free to report on the impact. So of course, they got blamed for the outbreak - hence "The Spanish Flu". Also, lots of people fought mask wearing. The US passed the 1918 Sedition Act "which made it a crime to say anything the government perceived as harming the country or the war effort".

To remind ourselves of how dangerous stupid people are we occasionally will post the five basic laws of human stupidity. I think #3 is particularly relevant with regard to COVID:

1 - Always and inevitably, everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.

2 - The probability that a certain person (will) be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.

3 - A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.

4 - Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular, non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places, and under any circumstances, to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.

5 - A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
