I thought this as well as that's usually how businesses ran. Now, a random social media account can put out pr's and speak for the company.
It only shows how far people will believe anything, but then why should we be surprised when the news will tell people the sky is yellow on Monday, and then tell those same people the sky is brown on Friday. Then when you question the people who believed the news about it being yellow, knowing it was never yellow, and everyone around told them it was never yellow, they're still convinced the news was the right source.
