Small operations do register domains on an annual basis. My company domain renewal is annual. Thousands reasons why ADE domain could be registered in CA with annual renewal. Could be an immediate placeholder. As of registering via godaddy, also nothing unusual. Phi Group is not 10000 employee corporation, it's a small staff operation company atm.
All of my corporate addresses are renewed one year at a time, in case I want to change registrars or hosts. The bigger hosts in the US are better for hosting than most of the smaller web hosts too, so registering with Go Daddy makes sense if you're unsure about where you want to host the site.
