Read the letter. It’s common that wealthy companies will have automatic defenders and that journalists defend “journalists”. I am sure a lot of journalists presume Adam is a “straight shooter” and don’t give it much thought beyond that.
But the letter is merely a clarification. The column did not allegeAdam committed securities fraud or traded shares, which is true. Some people trade information, and do favors not for money, but based upon an I scratch yours and you scratch my back. No idea if Adam does that either, but his scoops and praise seem to focus on particular kinds of companies and he may have a clique of sources upon which he relies heavily. Reporters build reputations with people who have the ability to give information, but sometimes need a favor in return. Whatever the case, and I do no know what exactly his problem is, or how he works, but he is obsessed beyond normalcy, posting even on message boards and social media, sometimes with posts that are so obviously not worthy of any factual publication that they could only be posted on social media. And that suggests there is some problem there.
Anyway, it’s a clarification, not an “apology”. But that Adam’s defenders always have it so ready to access is always informative.
The article is still up at WAPO, and it would be down if it were “false”. This is all my personal opinion and not an allegation of any law breaking by any journalist. See how that works?
Adam’s focus by the way is far too emotional and personal, but he is like that with all the companies he attacks. He wrongly takes delight in being denounced, it seems. Like some celebrities, bad publicity is still publicity. For writers, being a dastardly villain is just something they embrace, but that is not journalism.
