Everything you said is true, but that does not discount the value of these types of articles. Elsevier is one of the world wide leaders in publishing technical articles, books, and related materials (Ok, it is not always Cambridge level of status, but what is). Your comment about this not being NEMJ quality is no doubt true. But the NEMJ, Lancet, AMA, AHA etc. can only publish so many pieces, and if you are not in the Big guys club (with some of the potential conflicts of interest that can sometimes imply) you have no choice but to publish where you can. If it is an Elsevier publication I feel it can have some/decent, inherent merit. I have shot from the hip here and have made my own assessments of quality, others may differ.

Help me understand, please.
Earlier you said "I find their endorsement of Brilacidin as 'a most potent drug against SARS-CoV-2 than the known antiviral drugs' compelling".

Here you are saying: "Microbial Pathogenesis is hardly a 'prestigious' journal. In fact, it's an open-access journal. For those who don't know what an open-access journal is, it's where the authors pay to publish."

Does that make their endorsement less compelling?

"Oh yeah, Viruses is open access, too:
https://www.mdpi.com/journal/viruses "

Forgive my ignorance but does that mean that this was paid for by the authors (I wonder who, exactly)?
https://www.mdpi.com/search?q=brilacidin&journal=viruses

(This was interesting: "Cited by 1 | Viewed by 6336")

ps. Dug around on the mdpi website:
"open access publication is supported by the authors' institutes or research funding agencies by payment of a comparatively low Article Processing Charge (APC) for accepted articles."
The APC for Viruses is 2200 (Swiss Francs, CHF).
(converts to ~$2400US today)
https://www.mdpi.com/about/apc

Seems pretty insignificant.

How many of the covid 19 therapeutics that have not done so well had independent research and articles published in journals? And I should of mentioned where highly touted!

Open-access does not mean lesser quality. In fact, open-access is the trend in academic publishing. Authors, especially those supported by grants, often choose to pay for OA to increase the exposure. This is different from "pay for publication".
