I'd have to leave work early during the week for practices during the week.

You could tell the kids who had never played catch with their dads.

The same dads would bring their kids to practice and they'd be too busy on their Blackberries to even watch practice. Before the iPhone came in vogue.

We always had a hell of a time recruiting coaches since ideally we'd need 3. Then there was also the headache of keeping the box score, making up the lineup, making sure every kid got their playing time, and keeping the pitch count.

I also had to keep up my registration to coach and pass a background check every year along with taking an annual test.

I still maintain my coaching credentials and help the league out now whenever they need a coach. All on my dime.

The other guy I coached with both threw out our arms long ago throwing BP.

It's a labor of love.
