"Retail traders" always had full access. You just asked your broker to provide full trade info... if you cared to. But understand that almost no one day traded long ago. Commissions and taxes were too high.
One thing I've often said: just about everything a new stock "player" learns from stock boards is WRONG. You'll just about never hear wealthy successful investors talking about MMs.
Now run off and study your charts. I'm sure there's a gap that needs closing LOLOL!
