Guess as in all situations that is be the hope. So far China still moves inexorably ahead in the South China Sea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Hopefully larger conflict will be be avoided.

"At some point one would think that China will realize that their island building, intellectual property piracy and cyber shit are eliciting responses that are not to its advantage.

Add Japan, India, S. Korea, the Philippines and Indochina to the deterrence mix and America can hold their coats.

But Peter Jennings, the executive director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, says Australia does not necessarily have to deter China across the board. “We just have to persuade them that the cost of offensive operations against Australia is going to be too high,” he says.

Simple... Australia goes nuclear. All on their own. Even though Australia was a signatory party to the NPT, there's an escape clause. Anyone who previously tested nukes, are not bound to stay non-nuclear. Back in the early 1950s Australia was involved with, and conducted nuclear tests for the mother country UK. Therefore they could quickly develop a nuclear deterrence against China. A deterrence that would not have to depend on the US for nuclear deterrence, if Australia was attacked or even nuked by China.

It isn't a radical idea either. After the Soviet Union fell apart, and Putin came to power with a greatly weakened conventional military force, he let it be known: If you attack Russia with overwhelming conventional forces, we'll nuke ya. Australia could play the same game. Let's not forget N Korea is trying to play that game.

As if they really care (along with Iran, N. Korea and Russia).

I predict that China will take over Taiwan and Russia will take Ukraine before the Biden Presidency is over. Remember when Russia took Crimea? Both Russia and China know how easy it will be to back down O'Biden.

China....In many ways we have helped to create a monster...

China has little to fear, in any way...They are now a super power militarily and economically... They hold a lot of our debt and they are major producers for our corporations...They have, not 'the' upper hand, but a hand its hard to bet against...

In many ways they could care less what anyone thinks now...

Corporate America (and our gov) helped build them up,,,and now we are in the position we need to make alliances..

In the China sea as you point out, they built those Islands and are daring anyone to do anything about it......Not so unlike Russia with Crimea, Ukraine and Georgia..

Hong Kong is now gone for all practical purposes....Maybe even Taiwan next...

We can only do so much with the leverage we have, they have their own leverage now...
