Forget about all the new and incredible applications of smart road turtles. Let’s take traditional traffic sensors (Inductive-Loop, Infrared, Microwave, Video, etc). At traffic lights, they detect the presence, or non-presence, of a car to send a signal to the traffic light control system.

They will give you instantaneous visibility, not of the presence of a car at an intersection, but the volume, speed, and other parameters of cars for miles in all directions. This allows traffic management and coordination of the entire system and not just an intersection here and another there. PMPG has done a great job articulating revenue streams for the cities. Cities will greatly benefit from recouping the opportunity cost of reduced travel time, lower gasoline consumption, and less environmental pollution.
