makeamint: I predicted we would have the cross over today. That was before the stock exchange closed in honor of President Ford's death. That threw my calculation off by one day.

I'm not complaining, just pointing out that timing signals and technical analysis are often useful tools and worthy of the time spent learning some of the patterns and uses.

I am a firm believer in this upcoming one, sometimes called the Golden Cross. The 50 day and 200 day Moving Averages are very useful to long term investors as they take time to develop. When they cross two major indicators are in alignment. The same is true in the reverse direction. This shakes out the smaller squiggles of 10, 15, and 30 day averages. These are often false moves and not very useful in the long term, IMO, and only useful for short term in/out trading strategies.
