I have a competitve bodybuilder friend with terrible back pains for years. He can't "work out" anymore either. He does yoga every morning then walks a couple miles or otherwise be in pain that day he says. I'm not sure if the walking is necessary or just more exercise. He can't do anything a little.

Those are a lot of joints to replace and that would be the only almost complete fix, but maybe just doing the knees will help the hips and get you to where you can do a lot of walking for exercise. Walking is great exercise and low impact and if you can get back to where you can do that daily, you can a delay or prevent numerous health issues. Failing that, see if using a walker to extend your range will help get you out of the sedentary mode without making things worse. Just make sure to use the walker to add walking you could not otherwise do instead of replacing the walking you’re already doing.

If walking is no good even with a walker, gentle swimming at the local pool several times a week could be a good option, especially post-COVID-19.

OT reply: Bummer tryn2 be amusing! I did lift weights on heavier end up to a set of 225 lb, maybe 8 times in my mid-20s (think 265 was my max; I was 180 lbs), but then gradually dropped down to lower weights and raced mtn bikes, trail running, 8 marathons, etc (after getting Type 1 diabetes at age 26). That led to achilles issues and some planar fasciitis. So I evolved to mostly hiking (using poles is important; esp with pack or backpacking), cycling and today I did 40 sets of weights/core, 7.5 on stationary bike, and 15k (9.3 mi) on the Concept II rowing machine at 2:04 per 500m pace. Ouch...today's my bigger workout day before works week starts. :-)

I agree with HL, swimming is very good if you can enjoy it. The Y where I go to is packed with swimmers even during COVID-19 (great 82 deg F olympic size outdoor pool open if above 32 deg air temp) and indoor pool too; keep doors open for better ventilation.
