My advice is 1st get a second opinion. Short of that make sure the doc isn't a butcher.

The easiest way is to find an OR nurse at the hospital and ask her opinion of what she thinks of the surgeon.

Backs are nothing to screw with. There are good docs and then there are really butchers.
