I see an ideological, anti-élite, anti-science "freedom" backlash here (in the US) because our president and his administration have pushed the idea that masks don't work. Of course they do. When you are operated on, the doctors and the whole staff wear masks and always have. It works, to go maskless would be crazy and irresponsible. It is not valid research to state that a country, a city or a location has a COVID problem despite having been locked down, and therefore masks don't work. If you want to know about masks you need to test them and do controlled studies. There is a clear and direct relationship between the rural areas that are now inundated with COVID that have had no or little defense mechanisms (masks, distance, avoiding indoor crowding of people, etc.). Look at the COVID continually spread by the administration and their incessant, non-masked meetings. Is this all just by chance? The issue is now an ideological one. And that is really sad.
My in-laws in previously unmasked Wisconsin "stood up for freedom" thought the president and his administration "told it like it is" and thought masking silly. At last count 2 are still in the hospital, though 6 others have recovered since. I feel it is simply immoral to close your eyes to this. If you want to go out and not wear a high quality n-95 type mask, go do it, but realize you are responsible for the damage you cause others and yourself. That is wrong. I am trying not to be political, that is never a good thing to be here, but when a political philosophy turns anti-reality that needs to be called out. Masks and face shielding were used successfully in the 1918 flu pandemic, look it up, spend time on research as opposed to polemics. Sorry for the rant, but we need to be fact-based here, not ideology and anger based.
