Sports industry has lost billions. Every game with empty stands is easily $50mil lost between tickets, food, beer and merchandise. Even if the teams paid out of pocket for labs and tests, they'd still be losing less money than they are now.
There are projections for sports but it seems like more times than not they are off when it plays out. The NBA had an estimated amount for losses this year and were still $1.5 billion on losses over just the estimate.
