I don't think so. I assume they actually end up short 5x the number of shares they are short now.

I guess that means they sell them at the price at the close on the 28th.

No. It works same as longs. If we short a 100, we have now shorted 500 after the split. If you bought 100, you now own 500 after the split. It does requires shorts to cover more shares, theoretically at 1/5 the price.

No...they can only cover if they want...but shorts will also have their short shares multiplied by 5...hahaha
