I was a bit of a hurry perhaps.
A recognized patent in one country will enable, grant an option for a certain amount of time to register in other participating countries. If the investor does not follow through in other countries then the inventor loses the patent right in the countries he did not register with. So there is a set time frame after the successful registry in one country in which the inventor has time to register in the EU or worldwide.

Exception: software patents in the US are in most cases not recognized in the EU

Anavex has opted for WW protection.
