It would ruin a trial for people to know that a clinical halt was imposed because of a concern for the safety of the placebo patients, especially a trial as delicate as this one.

That’s ultimately what I assumed would be the issue, ie, the regulators would have a huge issue with the trial if there was any indication of the blind being broken, ethically (and ultimately counterproductively) or unethically.

The Germans had one of the best scientific traditions as well. Presumably they would understand the issues involved on that side as well.
