The Capital club will embrace the latest technology for the visit of Gloucester in the European Cup on Sunday week by allowing fans to have "tickets" sent to their mobiles.
The scheme, the first of its kind in Scotland, will see fans who buy a seat for the game in the club's webstore being offered the option of a mobile ticket.
Those taking up the offer will be sent their tickets in the form of a two-dimensional barcode in an SMS message. The barcode provides event-specific details of where they will sit and the kick-off time.
Once at Murrayfield, the fan opens the mobile text message and shows it to an electronic reader that will scan the barcode and grant access.
The only other sports club in Britain to use the scheme are Southend United FC.
Edinburgh Rugby's commercial director, Ian Riddoch, said: "Southend's chairman, Geoff King, is highly innovative and recommended this to us.
"Mobile ticket technology will become increasing familiar as this type of service begins to be rolled out at sports venues, events and attractions throughout the UK. Our fans will be intrigued and excited by this technology and its speed of delivery.
"Within minutes of buying a ticket on the website or on their phone, the consumer will receive the SMS ticket direct to their mobile, resulting in a more personalised, direct and quicker entry to the stadium."
Mobile tickets, developed by specialist access provider APT SkiData and mobile content transaction specialist Smartmachine, can be ordered via www.edinburghrugby.com or by calling 0845 0943640.
The capital club is working with specialist access provider APT SkiData and mobile content transaction specialist Smartmachine, to pilot a new mobile phone ticketing initiative at Murrayfield Stadium.
The pilot, the first of its kind in Scotland, will see fans who buy a ticket from the club’s webstore being offered the option of a mobile ticket. If the fan requests a mobile ticket, they are sent their 'tickets' in the form of a two-dimensional (2D) barcode in an SMS message directly to their mobile phone, which provides event specific details of where they were sitting and kick-off time.
Once at Murrayfield Stadium, the fan opens the text message on their mobile and will be asked to present it to a reader that will scan the barcode and grant access to the game.
Commenting on the trial, Edinburgh Rugby’s Commercial Director Ian Riddoch said: “We are delighted to be working with Smartmachine/APT SkiData on this initiative as it offers our supporters a unique and dynamic opportunity to try the very latest method of buying tickets for our games. We have a clear objective to further improve our customer service and communication with our fans, and using mobile phone technology is a good way of achieving this.
“Mobile ticket technology will become increasing familiar to consumers as this type of service begins to be rolled out at sports venues, events and attractions throughout the UK. We are sure our fans will be both intrigued and excited by this technology and its speed of delivery. Within minutes of buying a ticket on the web or on the phone, the consumer receives the SMS ticket direct to their mobile resulting in a more personalised, direct and quicker entry to the stadium.”
Edinburgh Rugby fan Julia Dearden, who took part in some initial testing of the service at the recent game against the Border Reivers said: “This is very clever and really easy to use. I’ll certainly use this service again as its perfect for me because I don’t have to collect tickets or rely on the post to deliver tickets to me.”
APT SkiData’s Renier Steyn added: “We are thrilled to be trialing this technology with Edinburgh Rugby, Britain’s fastest growing sports club. The Club is dynamic, forward thinking and is the perfect partner for us to trial with. The clever integration of having a phone act as a ticket to access a ground will be revolutionary to many but gives clubs virtually limitless possibilities for the future, especially from a customer relationship perspective."
The trial will start with the Edinburgh’s Heineken Cup game against Gloucester on Sunday 17 December 2006, which kicks off at 1pm. Mobile tickets can be ordered via www.edinburghrugby.com or by calling 0845 0943640.
Nkanyane - Mr. Registered | 2006-12-07 12:07:14 this is simply brilliant.
Patterson - Mobile Ticketing Registered | 2006-12-08 11:18:42 Great Idea. Should cut down the queues at the turnstiles as well.
