What's logical is not throwing good money after bad. Not that it was bat at the time it was spent, but I think we can both agree that it would not have been spent if they could have seen this coming, so by definition it's bad money now.

Logically it is only bad if there is no intent to use what you purchase.

But since they are going to seek out new uses for the purchase it well could be money well spent.
