Trying to resurrect generic steel manufacturing in the US is foolish.
CLF’s CEO, Laurenco Goncalves agrees with this, in part. He considers AKS the polar opposite of a generic steelmaker, but he supports tariffs to enable the existing commodity segment of the US steelmaking industry (CLF’s external customers for iron-ore pellets) to survive.
IMO Navarro and Lighthizer seems to have done well for Trump in getting some trade and IP agreements with China. Navarro also wrote a memo back in January about the threat of Covid-19.
