HDG - maybe I’m being an alarmist here, but what the hell, I’ll throw it out there. Here goes:

The complete economic collapse we are heading for (think Great Depression on steroids) may carry a higher cost in terms of life than Covid.

HDG, saw an interesting segment of CBS-TV this evening, following the segment re GILD, INO and Moderna ventures on virus.

That segment gave details about the Populist views of some (or most?) people in Hungary, including current leader. The focus was on increasing the Hungarian population and thereby improving the economy. Benefits are being paid to newly married couples, depending on how many children they have.

1) no children, no benefits.

2) one child, a benefit check arrives.

3) two children, a benefit that is twice the value of 2) arrives.

4) three children, a benefit that is three times the value of 1) arrives, amounting to cost of living of that family

The story and interviews stopped there. There were also photos of fence/wall structures extending along the southern border of Hungary, designed to prevent any people on the other side of the fence/wall from entering Hungary.

We have been to Hungary/Budapest only once, about 10 years ago on a river cruise from Amsterdam. The Danube had low water that year; the boat stopped short of Budapest and we boarded a bus that took us on a 2-3 hour ride through the farm country until we reached Budapest.

We saw none of above south of Budapest. We left Hungary with the sense impression that the economy was doing as well as Austria or Germany.
