There was sound research basis for pursuing Beta Amyloid theory and a bunch of pharmas pursued it relentlessly. It turned out to be a dead end. But may be part of the puzzle. It is certainly a part of our approach, but from, hopefully, higher up an effective pathway.
Those folks are of course not insane, they took a risk. As are we. We have to be careful about self-congratulations until we've proven our track is truly effective. The jury is still out. These CNS pathologies have proven incredibly complex and the S1 receptor is not magical. Pharmacologically stimulating it is worth trying though, and looks promising.
